Mission Statement

Aequitas Theatre Company was set up as an alternative to typecasting or any casting based on looks. It is made up of a diverse and small group of actors who have decided to reclaim their industry and are thirsty for challenge and opportunity, reflecting their creative natures. These actors want to think outside the box and explore any uncharted territory of the theatre, adding writer, director, producer, technician, and designer to their list of playable roles.

The purpose of this particular theatre company is to accept all shapes, sizes, colours, and creeds, and to begin to make a change in the way actors are viewed and treated, if only a local one at first. Ultimately, the company will become an international one, making a name for itself as a company changing the industry for actors.

Part of the way we work on this issue is through being a part of the Equity Professionally Made: Professionally Paid Campaign. In order to foster the diversity that makes our creative work so awesome, we make sure we pay actors and crew the National Minimum Wage so that the opportunity to work with us is there for everyone.

A Note From The Artistic Director

This theatre company first began in idea form at the beginning of 2009 when I was finishing up my BFA in Drama at NYU. I had been speaking with friends and colleagues about how the industry I found myself in had always been biased towards men, with few opportunities for women, especially if they weren’t the magazine image the media tells them to be. It then grew while I was pursuing a Masters in Classical Theatre in London, when I realized it wasn’t just the American industry that was this way, but the global theatre and media industries; it wasn't just women that had this problematic standard set for them by the media, but anyone who was the slightest bit different. So this company is for anyone who needs a home and was born to make theatre!
